Computers and robots are reaching out from beyond the desktop into our lives. However, our world is a complex and confusing place for computers, so it is difficult for them to make our lives easier. You can help create smarter computers by sharing some of your knowledge with computers.
On this website, you help by building simple 3D models of everday objects. This project is seeking to collect thousands or even millions of 3D models of the real world that can be freely used in artificial intelligence research. In a few years, you'll be able to buy a robot assistant and tell it to "clean the bathroom". Thanks to your contributions today, your robot will be able to understand words like bathroom, soap, brush and shower, recognize them in the home and know how to safely and correctly handle them.
Think of an object. Any object. At home, at work, in the park, at the mall, outdoors or even outer-space. The mundane or the obscure. Now, click on the button below to create a model and make it become a (virtual) reality. It is very easy!
Every contribution goes to the public domain so that future researchers and developers will be free to use your work. However, while you're waiting for them to invent a robot servant, you can share your creative contributions with your friends.
Of course, if 3D models are not your thing, you can still help out with other similar projects: Cyc's FACTory, Games with a Purpose, Open Mind Commonsense.
This site was launched in March 2011. Artificial Intelligence researchers will be able to download the collected 3D models in the months to come.
This database of everyday objects is managed by Benjamin Johnston for the Comirit project, an effort to give computers and robots commonsense. Do you have Comments or Feedback?
